Time Borrows Photo Inspiration from NBA Ad Campaign
Staff Report

NBA print ad (l.) versus the Time's cover.

April 28, 2008--This year's NBA Print & Video campaign inspired the Time Magazine Cover, according to National Basketball Association spokesperson Francine Winiker.

The NBA's new video/ print campaign for the 2008 post season features split images of NBA players with the tag line "There Can Only Be One." The image features LeBron James on the left and Kevin Garnett next to him.

Now, this week's issue of Time features a split image of Democratic presidential hopefuls Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton with the identical tag line-'There Can Only Be One', says Winiker. Time does credit the NBA with the inspiration for their cover, she says.

Journalist Sarah Talalay who writes "The Business of Sports," a column in Florida's Sun-Sentinel newspaper wrote:

"If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the NBA can thank Time Magazine for paying tribute to its playoff ads that are part of the league's "Where Amazing Happens" campaign."

Talalay claims Time actually contacted the NBA before using its image, in addition to crediting the league's 2008 playoff ad campaign on its content page with "inspiring the cover photo illustration. "
