Washington, DC (December 14, 2007)—Smithsonian magazine is accepting submissions for its fifth annual photo contest. Photos must be submitted at photocontest.smithsonianmag.com by 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, January 3, 2008.
Fifty finalists will be selected to have their works published on the Smithsonian Web site and in Smithsonian magazine. Five category winners will be awarded $500 cash prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a four-day, three-night “Smithsonian Journeys Grand Canyon Weekend Adventure” for two from July 11-14, 2008.
In the past four years, Smithsonian editors have judged a total of 58,500 photographs from more than 90 countries around the globe. Each year the editors look for technical quality, clarity, composition, and a flair for the unexpected. The photo competition is open to amateur photographers, 18 years or older, who have captured a stunning image in the past three years.
For the first time, this year’s photo contest allows Smithsonian.com visitors to help judge entries with the addition of “You Be the Judge.” After the 50 finalists are notified of their status in late March 2008, the general public can log onto Smithsonian.com to vote for one readers’ choice winner, which will be revealed online in summer 2008.
The five contest categories are subjects of special interest to the magazine:
Americana—Events, objects or activities connecting the American people to their cultural heritage.
The Natural World—Animals, plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features; and scientific processes and endeavors. People—Individuals from all walks of life.
Travel—Locales, people or activities in the United States and abroad that convey a sense of place.
Altered Images—Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (hand coloring, toning, bleaching, collage and photo composites).
All photographs must be submitted online. Photo entries submitted through the postal mail will not be accepted. Photographs must be uploaded by 2 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, Thursday, January 3, 2008.
Fifty finalists will be selected, 10 for each of the five categories. From these 50 finalists, five category winners and one grand prize winner will be selected. The winning entries will be published on the Smithsonian magazine Web site as well as in Smithsonian magazine during summer 2008.
