The photobook steps.

Cologne, PHOTOKINA--Sihl, a German-based company synonymous with the production of coated and refined papers and films showcased many of their products at photokina.

Below are the product highlights.

AUROLUX: Sihl's new highlight for solvent inks

In the run-up to photokina,, Sihl is announced a new, high-quality backlit product for sophisticated applications with solvent inks: AUROLUX Backlit Solvent WF150 glossy. The 150m thick and 180g/m2 heavy backlit polyester film is finished with a glossy coating for modern eco and low-solvent inks. The advantage of this special film is its especially strong resistance to mechanical stress and changes in temperature and humidity. Brilliantly glossy both day and night, this film is an inexpensive addition to the existing Optilux Backlit range.

The newly developed AUROLUX coating makes it possible to produce brilliantly vivid colours even when only one layer of ink is applied. In "double-print mode", the product achieves unique results when viewed with light from above or with back lighting. High levels of humidity and even condensation do not affect prints. AUROLUX Backlit Solvent WR 150 glossy 3566 is widely compatible with modern solvent inks of the kind used in standard printing systems by Epson, HP, Mimaki, Mutoh and Roland. Sihl Professional Inkjet Photo and Creative Papers

Sihl Professional Photo Papers -- divided into the areas Studio, Gallery and Museum -- offer professional and semi-professional users new creative scope to put their image ideas onto paper in optimal printing quality.

Sihl's p3 studio range (red) consists of three professional inkjet photo papers that produce pictures of photorealistic laboratory quality, under the label "Gallery" (blue) users will find a new baryta paper and Sihl's Professional Photo Canvas 320 - the most recent addition - joins the Museum range (yellow).

P3 Studio

Studio products are produced using Sihl's own Profi SuperDry coating technology which allows high colour saturation, a wide tonal value and contrast range as well as high maximum densities. The result is exceptionally well-resolved pictures with a depth effect, black and white reproduction and high colour brilliance. The professional SuperDry coating guarantees an even sheen in printed and unprinted areas. Sihl's Studio paper range has been optimised for printing with pigment inks but it is also for dye-based inks. It is available in three varieties: "Professional Photo Paper PE 330" high gloss with a grammage of 330 g/m, "Professional Photo Paper PE 300" satin-finished in 300 g/m and "Professional Photo Paper PE 330 DS" satin-finished and printable on both sides in 325 g/m.

P3 Gallery

Sihl's new Professional Photo Baryta 290 optimally combines the look, feel and durability of traditional baryta paper used in the traditional photo laboratory with the latest inkjet technology. In traditional photo laboratories, baryta photographic paper has long been considered the best possible solution when top-quality exhibition pictures are required. Beholders are inspired by deep, saturated blacks and the finest nuances of light and shade. This paper is particularly popular - not just because of its special surface impression - among art collectors, gallery owners and museums where maximum picture and archival stability are called for. Sihl's new Professional Photo Baryta290 meets all these requirements and achieves results on inkjet printers which are in many respects "superior" to those of laboratories.

The surface of the new 290 g/m heavy paper from Sihl's Gallery series features a special surface finish containing real barite, or barium sulphate. Use of a microporous inkjet coating allows an wide colour gamut with excellent light and shade definition, especially in combination with pigment inks. The absence of optical brightening agents and an acid-free basis as well as an acid-buffered composition ensure optimal picture and archival stability. The finest nuances in grey tones and a saturated black with high maximum densities make this paper predestined for the printing of artistic black and white motifs.

This is possible in all popular sizes and - in contrast with the complex and time-consuming laboratory technique - with absolute flatness as soon as the paper emerges from the printer. The surface structure is based upon that of traditional baryta paper from the laboratory. The paper's magnificent gloss with warm tone character resembles that of air-dried baryta paper. With an intermediate layer consisting of a large proportion of barium sulphate (baryta), Sihl achieves very pure whites without the addition of optical brightening agents. The new creative papers made of 100 percent cellulose combine maximum quality, durability and optical impression. Thanks to the microporous inkjet coating, they are compatible with the dye and pigment-based inks used in the latest generation of Canon, Epson and HP printers, and dry instantly.

P3 Museum: photo art on canvas

Sihl has recently extended its range of professional inkjet paper with the addition of a canvas quality. Sihl's Professional Photo Canvas 320, which has a grammage of 320 g/m, is particularly suitable for photographic reproductions and portraits. It is matt-coated on one side and is based on a particularly finely woven polyester-cotton mix. This homogeneous, almost closed 1:1 structure guarantees a failure-free representation of skin tones and coloured surfaces. For a special picture effect, the surface has a visibly linen-like texture with excellent stretch and fixing properties. This ensures that the new canvas material remains taught after framing even after a long period of time. Another characteristic of the new Sihl Inkjet Canvas is its porous inkjet coating which allows a high level of colour saturation, a wide range of contrasts and high maximum densities. Photos and portraits printed on Sihl's Canvas material are therefore characterised by black and white reproduction and high colour saturation. The product also has advantages in terms of handling: the water-resistant inkjet coating guarantees a short drying time and optimum ink fixation. In combination with pigment inks, long-lasting picture results can be achieved. Prints can be additionally protected with a spray or varnish for improved scratch and light resistance.

Everybody who owns a PC and inkjet printer can take advantage of the unlimited possibilities of state-of-the-art technology for their own personal requirements at last. A wedding album can look as perfect as a book produced by a professional printer, birthday albums full of precious memories make an ideal gift. Family photo albums capture all those comical moments and the travel album is also a must. Collectors can present the best examples from their collections in album form, just as architects document their building projects, painters their works of art or photographers and designers their latest creations. Alongside the many different uses in the commercial sector, recipe books or illustrated children's books can also be created. The list of applications is endless - we guarantee the outstanding effect of presentations.

The coating makes the difference

For Sihl's Premium Photo Paper, which is printable on both sides, a specially developed single-layer technology (SuperDry coating) is used. This coating consists of microscopically small particles which are combined with bonding agents developed by Sihl to form an even matrix. Ink absorption is optimally controlled by this homogeneous coating. The dyes adhere more effectively to the surface, guaranteeing high colour saturation. Excellent whiteness and deep blacks also make for a wide contrast range. Combined with high maximum densities, these properties produce prints with a vivid, almost three-dimensional look. Pictures are also characterised by an exact grey balance, natural skin colour reproduction and good detail rendition in light and shade.

When it comes to opacity, a measure of the light resistance of paper, Sihl Premium Photo Paper also receives top marks. This means that prints do not show through onto the reverse sides, an important property when photo albums are being produced. Thanks to its robust quality, it is ideal for everyday use. Superfluous water and other components are drained off the surface via specially produced, microscopically small channels. The surface of the paper therefore dries instantly. Even when maximum quantities of ink are used, Sihl Photo Paper DS remains stable and absolutely wrinkle free thanks to the base paper.

Special inkjet films with top photographic quality

At this year's photographic show photokina in Cologne, Sihl rounds off its range of display films with two products: both the SuperDry Roll-up Film 190 (satin 3471) and the SuperDry PoP-up Film 330 (satin 3472) are based on an opaque white, satinated PET film (polyester) with a light-tight grey reverse side. Both completely non-transparent inkjet materials have Sihl's microporous SuperDry coating which is known for its excellent photographic quality. They are characterised by a combination of top photographic quality and practical suitability for daily use. Because of their rigidity and stiffness, the robust films guarantee perfect flatness even under different climatic conditions and are therefore very easy to use. Their perfect printer compatibility, easy processing and satinated surface structure all speak for these unique materials.

With its SuperDry Roll-up Film 190 and the SuperDry PoP-up Film 330, Sihl offers users a high-end material, which introduces previously unknown photographic qualities to these fields when combined with pigment inks. Equipped with a special antistatic backing, these films are ideal for premium-quality printed images, such as those required for photorealistic posters, displays for the POS sector, high-quality photo reproductions, pop-up displays and for short-term advertising and indoor signs.

High-end coating for super photographic quality

Thanks to Sihl's microporous SuperDry technology, the material achieves an outstandingly good photographic quality on all well-known printing systems available on the market, which is superior in many respects to laboratory produced results. This special coating allows inks to be perfectly controlled so that they adhere more effectively to the surface of the medium. The very high level of colour saturation achieved allows greater colour gamut. Even the neutral reproduction of achromatic colours combined with very deep blacks guarantees a very three-dimensional picture and a unique luminosity of films.

The printed films are also characterised by soft transitions of colour with high resolutions and excellent contour definition. Within fractions of a second, the SuperDry layer absorbs even large quantities of ink in a controlled way. The colouring agents pigments or dye-based inks are fixed to the surface and water and other ink components are drained off via deliberately produced microscopically fine channels.

Inkjet specialities: a class of their own

The polyester films (190 + 330 m / 250 + 450 g/m2) are convincing not only in terms of photo reproduction but also with regard to processing and versatility. One of the reasons is the stiffness of the polyester film, which guarantees optimum flatness and tear resistance.

Because of their dimensional stability and resistance to moisture and temperature as well as its mechanical robustness - preferably 30-65% relative humidity and 10-30 C - these materials are perfect for all areas of high-end photo and graphic reproduction. They also have good laminating properties (hot or cold) for longer-term use. Sihl's films work well on current printers by Canon, Epson and HP (if required with "Gloss Optimizer") and produce an optimum combination of printing quality and durability, especially with pigmented inks (Lucia Pigmented, UltraChrome, Vivera Pigmented). The special reverse side finish also guarantees a smooth feed and, in HP printers, error-free recognition for the camera-driven feed function.

Sihl's SuperDry Roll-up Film 190 (satin 3471) and SuperDry PoP-up Film 330 (satin 3472) are both available in lengths of 20 m and widths of 914 mm (36"), 1067 mm (42") and 1270 mm (50"). Order now from Sihl Direct GmbH under www.sihl-direct.de.

Polyester films with adhesive or transparent layer

At this year's photo show photokina in Cologne, Sihl presented its SpiriTac Film SA 190 (glossy 3675) and the Spirit Film 130 (glossy 3642). SpiriTac Film SA 190 is a clear microporous coated polyester film with a special removable self-adhesive backing, which is covered with a PP release liner. After application onto glass or acrylic glass the film can be quickly and easily removed without causing damage or leaving behind residues.

The Spirit Film 130 can be used both in reprographic offset and screen printing as well as in the backlit sector. The microporous coated PET film has a clear coating with a low Dmin. When printed, it achieves a transmission optical density of at least 3.0 in dark sections and is therefore ideal for use as a reprographic film with black ink (K), but also as a large-format slide.

Used with the latest generation of printers, SpiriTac Film SA 190 produces results that are characterised by brilliant colours and high densities. Inks dry instantly and guarantee a very good transparency. The film adheres evenly and easily to clear or opaque glass or acrylic glass surfaces.

Thanks to the soft adhesive, films can be removed or replaced within a matter of seconds. The special SuperDry coating guarantees outstanding photographic quality and printer compatibility with all standard inks. Photorealistic posters and images, high-quality photo reproductions, signs for the indoor sector or advertising can be produced simply, quickly and in highest printing quality. The film is highly practical, boasts a robust composition and very good laminating properties. The film is intended for wet adhesion but can also be applied in a dry state. For this kind of application, the surface is optimally protected with a cold laminate.

Spirit Film SA 130 is designed above all for colour separation and the creation of clear large-format slides. It can be used to produce reprographic offset and silkscreen films, to print backlit films or large-format slides and is also suitable for other applications where a crystal clear medium is required. The results dry very quickly and with all common, currently available printing systems very good to excellent printing quality is achieved, although use of pigment ink is recommended.

SuperDry coating for photographic quality

Thanks to Sihl's microporous SuperDry technology, both products achieve an unbeatably good photographic quality which is superior in many respects to laboratory produced results.

This special coating allows inks to be perfectly controlled so that they adhere more effectively to the surface of the carrier. The very high level of colour saturation that is possible allows a wider colour gamut. Even the neutral reproduction of achromatic colours combined with very deep blacks guarantees a very three-dimensional picture and a uniquely luminous quality.

The printed films are also characterised by soft transitions of colour with high resolutions and excellent contour definition. Within fractions of a second, the SuperDry layer absorbs even large quantities of ink in a controlled way. The colouring agents - pigments or dye-based inks - are fixed to the surface and water and other ink components are drained off via deliberately produced microscopically fine channels.

The advantages are:

coating contains no optical brightening agents

extremely quick-drying

very good gloss

high brilliance

absolutely homogeneous surface

Glossy, opaque white polyester films

Sihl introduced an opaque white polyester film with the well-known, microporous SuperDry coating. The SuperDry Display Film 165 (glossy 3473) is characterised by a combination of photographic quality and high-gloss effect.

Because of its rigidity and stiffness, the robust film guarantees perfect flatness even under different climatic conditions and is therefore very easy to use. Its perfect printer compatibility, easy processing and surface structure as well as favourable price make this a unique inkjet product.

Some users miss the unique Cibachrome materials which were later renamed Ilfochrome. Photo prints with excellent high-gloss quality and luminous-looking colours fascinated both photographers and contemplators. Sihl fills this gap with its SuperDry Display Film 165, a high-end product for professional inkjet printing. The films that are equipped with a special antistatic backing are ideal for perfect photo reproduction, such as that required for exhibition posters, display films for the POS sector, high-quality photo reproductions, pop-up displays and packaging proofs.

Polyester film for top-quality frontprints

Sihl introduced a translucent polyester film with the well-known, microporous SuperDry coating. Thanks to its properties in the inkjet sector, SuperDry Light Box Film 175 (satin 3461) will set completely new standards.

Because of the special coating, the slide film achieves the highest photographic quality for the production of light box displays. Perfect printer compatibility, easy processing and surface structure as well as a favourable price make this inkjet material a unique product. With the introduction of Sihl's SuperDry Light Box Film 175, the last bastion of the analogue laboratory falls after the baryta sector. Thanks to Sihl's microporous SuperDry technology, the material achieves an unbeatably good photographic quality on all well-known inkjet printing systems, which is in many respects superior to laboratory produced results. This special coating allows inks to be perfectly controlled so that they adhere more effectively to the surface of the medium. The very high level of colour saturation achieved allows a wider colour gamut. Even the natural reproduction of achromatic colours combined with very deep blacks guarantees an exceptionally three-dimensional picture and a uniquely luminous quality.

The printed film is also characterised by soft transitions of colour with high resolutions and excellent contour definition. Within fractions of a second, the SuperDry layer absorbs even large quantities of ink in a controlled way. The colouring agents - pigments or dye-based inks - are fixed to the surface and water and other ink components are drained off via deliberately produced microscopically fine channels.

Qualities for photorealistic advertisements and photographic art The translucent film (190 / 225 g/m2) is exceptional not only in terms of superior photographic quality, it also scores top marks when it comes to processing and versatility. One of the reasons is the stiffness of the polyester film which guarantees optimum flatness and tear-resistance.

Because of its dimensional stability and resistance to moisture and temperature as well as its mechanical robustness - preferably 30-65% relative humidity and 10-30 C - this material is perfect for all areas of high-end photo and graphic reproduction. It also has good laminating properties (hot or cold) for longer-term use. The Sihl film works well with current printers by Canon, Epson and HP (if required with "Gloss Optimizer") although the pigmented inks (Lucia Pigmented, UltraChrome, Vivera Pigmented) are able to combine most advantages. Applications range from signs or advertisements for the indoor sector to high-quality photographic objects with permanent background lighting.

For experiments and photographic art

Photography is gradually liberating itself from the restraints of laboratory work and is taking over the artistic field with the increasing number of new inkjet media.

Object art with permanent background lighting for photographs stagnated because of the limited number of materials that were not always perfectly suited to their purpose. With its SuperDry Light Box Film 175, Sihl is introducing onto the market for the first time a film that produces results that surpass those of the silver salt technique. Equipped with a translucent light dispersion layer on the reverse side, the film is simply mounted in a light box or light display with no additional light dispersion glass.

Thanks to its exceptionally strong illuminating power and optical densities (Dmax 3,5 and more) that are possible with current pigment inks, superior-quality digital illuminated pictures (large-format slides) are achieved. The high density of over 3.0 (transmission OD) together with nanoporous coating and now very small quantities of ink pigments produce an absolutely perfect printed area, especially in homogeneous sections. Maximum colour saturation enhances the visual experience that even the best photographic cannot produce. Even projected slides fail to fascinate the beholder as much as visual motifs printed on Sihl's new film.
