For a full frame lens, you will get wider angle (and higher resolution by covering a wider area) on the D700.
For DX lenses, you can let the D700 choose to crop to a half frame, like the D300, or you can force it to cover the full area. If you cover the full area, you will see vignetting, HOWEVER with the right lens shade you can crop back in Photoshop to EITHER A HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL half frame without turning the camera, or deciding in the field which you want. This is like taking a horizontal and vertical picture at the same time and deciding later which you want.
