In its second annual event, the 2009 Hope Calendar project proudly donated $5,000 to its beneficiary, Montgomery County Women's Center earlier this month.
Two years ago, Debi Gomez, owner of Houston-based Life's Images Photography, created a fundraiser for local family charities using her skill photographing children. With the support of other small businesses, she photographed kids aged newborn to 9 years (all volunteers) and created a calendar, which was sold to benefit charity. The Hope Calendar project was featured in August 2008's Studio Photography magazine and worked so well that it has become an annual marketing and fundraising campaign.
"I wanted to create an annual event that would inspire hope and that the community could participate in to support organizations focused on the family," Gomez said. "The Hope Calendar blends an innate love for children with the desire to do charitable work in a really fun way and has gathered an outpouring of support. I am excited to have such a great response to the project."
Local organizations underwrote the calendar production, allowing 100 percent of the proceeds to be donated to this year's recipient. Orders for the calendar were taken from October 2008 through February 2009, giving participants a good feeling about starting off the New Year.
"It's great that we've been able to use my camera and something as simple as a calendar to make a difference in the community," Gomez said. "A few people with passion can really accomplish a lot! Having lost a loved one to domestic violence, I am especially hopeful that this year's donation to the local women's center will that spare that suffering for other families."
