Chris Rainier ( and, Colorado and Upstate New York-based documentary photographer, is a National Geographic Fellow, editor of National Geographic Traveler, contributing photographer for National Geographic Adventurer, and co-director of National Geographic’s Cultures program, Ethnosphere. He is a correspondent on photography for National Public Radio, and has covered the globe for numerous publications, including Time, Life, The New York Times, and organizations such as Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and the United Nations. His photos are in permanent collections worldwide, including the International Center of Photography, NY; Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C.; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France; Australian National Museum, Sydney, Australia. His published photography books are Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Markings, Keepers of the Spirit and Where Masks Still Dance, New Guinea.
