Finding he couldn't get the image he wanted by just leaning over the rail and clicking away, he knew just what to do. He moved the oak-brown table and China-blue bowl to avoid monotonous symmetry and"kind of give it that nautilus feeling," says Feinknopf.
He had a similar connection when he captured the lobby image of the Blackwell Hotel (p.6).
“I was just walking through the space when the shot's unique composition jumped out at me."
Once he addressed the intrinsic depth-of-field challenge, the image was his.
Feinknopf knows how fortunate he is to have had his two professional passions-photography and architecture-dovetail into a lifelong career.
His architectural perspective served him well when he designed and built his studio in downtown Columbus in 2004. In collaboration with Jonathan Barnes, of Jonathan Barnes Architecture & Design, he built a 3,000-square-foot space with ceiling-to-floor windows, with western and southern exposures. Sunlight streams in all day long.
No wonder Feinknopf says,"There is never a day that I don't want to go to work."
While he can't quite explain his intuitive connection with buildings, he talks of feeling it in his gut. Maybe our high-end Houdini should just call it what it is: magic. ?
