Our panel was split on whether the trend is toward more realistic or more abstract backgrounds. For example, Karen Gupta, owner of Backdrop Outlet (www.backdropoutlet.com), in Chicago, Illinois, says, “We’ve seen a trend toward more realistic backgrounds, so we’ve added new faux tex backgrounds in brick, cobblestone, barn wood, and other textures that offer clients a thin rubber type material that rolls like a canvas,” says Gupta. “With custom computer painted canvas you can submit any image and we can make a background for you at no extra charge.” In response to increased demand for sets and props, they have expanded their set system props. “Our petal mat backgrounds are still popular and we now offer bloomer and bonnets to match.”

Knowledge Background’s Pastorcich sees photographers searching for more abstract style backdrops with flowing patterns, basket weave designs, and some geometric shapes. “We also receive more requests from photographers for theme-oriented, scenic-style backgrounds for proms, etc.”

“Backgrounds will remain a vital key to the success of a good photographer,” says Westcott VP Mondora. “While the photo industry goes through changes in styles and presentations of images, backgrounds give an image the classic and traditional ingredient many families and individuals seek for their portraits.”
