On the Case
Manufacturers are outfitting their bags, cases, portfolios, and carts with the latest technologies and convenience features to maximize their functionality and accessibility for photographers on the go.

Take Lowepro's Primus AW, the industry's first photo backpack made of mainly recycled material.

"Each bag contains enough recycled material to equal 22.6 soda bottles, and we're donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the backpack to Polar Bears International," says Caballero. "Now that recycled fabric has reached our standard of quality, we'll continue to see more bags developed with eco-friendly materials. Nature provides photographers with infinite opportunities for unforgettable images, and Lowepro is proud to play an integral part in supporting worldwide conservation efforts."

Tamrac's Memory & Battery Management System offers a particularly useful solution in today's digital world. "Unlike using a roll of film, you can't determine if a memory card is full of images or empty just by looking at it," explains Kirk. "Tamrac's patented system consists of small memory-card pockets with red flags to identify available memory cards and batteries from those that are used up. This feature is found in most of Tamrac's shoulder bags and backpacks."

Tamrac is also sensitive to sensor-contamination issues. "For nearly 30 years, the ability to carry a camera with a lens attached has been an important feature of nearly every Tamrac bag," Kirk continues. "Today, this is even more important because of sensor-contamination concerns with digital SLRs. Consequently, nearly every professional Tamrac product allows the photographer to carry not just one, but two SLRs with lenses attached."

Sometimes, the hallmark of quality photographic bags and cases involves keeping it simple.

"We just focus on making well-made, fun, and funky bags that keep your equipment well-padded and nice and secure," says Crumpler's Cousley.
