The very best printing is also a vital concern to Dumas. “I am one of the pickiest photographers when it comes to prints,” she says. Using four separate labs—the Black & White Lab in Arizona, Burrell Professional Labs, Millers Professional Imaging, and a local processing film lab—help maintain the quality standards that are part of her high-end, custom style.
Throughout the three- to four-month portrait process, from phone screening to design session, Dumas balances efficiency with artistry. “I have learned how to say very quickly: ‘I create fine portraits of your children and family to be used as art in your home,’ I say that every time, and it sums up exactly what I do.”
Once customers begin to see the images through Dumas’s eyes, they come to view her work with a new perspective. During the 2003 San Diego Wildfires, Dumas’s clients told her that her photos were among the first things they loaded into their car. While she finds such comments flattering and inspiring, Dumas is constantly perfecting her art.
“I study art by going to museums and learning about lead lines and s-curves. I’ve studied for 25 years, and I’m always learning and taking classes. It is all about continuing to grow, keep growing, and growing.”
