Finding the Right Site for a Shoot
Have You Considered Hiring a Location Scout?
For Trex, manufacturers or decks and railings, I scouted many coastal sites, such as the one below, for a setting into which a custom-designed deck would be digitally inserted. The photographer and I crouched cliffside all day making multiple versions of the image with different lenses, filters, times of day, waiting for the waves to crash with each click of the shutter. Later, designers worked with a model maker to create a 1/3 scale model of a dream deck, which was seamlessly integrated into the final image.

For the J.D. Edwards campaign, we conceived of a shipping facility, a strong symbol of industrial power, to meet the client’s objective of appealing to industry. I scouted throughout California for a container terminal that would allow us access for photography. After much networking, the lessor of a Southern California site invited me to scout their location. We all loved its vanishing point and the graceful curve of the ship framing the distant horizon.
