  • Back up, back up, back up! And back up your backup.

  • Don’t make any changes during a shoot or the morning of a shoot unless they are absolutely necessary. Don’t recalibrate your monitor, don’t install new software, and don’t change computers. Changing these variables leads to inconsistency and can render results you’re not expecting.

  • Own your own gear—you’ll know it inside and out (e.g., you’ll know what to do if your digital back crashes, what happens if you put the Caps Lock key on by mistake while exporting, etc. Owning your own gear is just another way to reduce variables that can lead to bad files.
