“Photographing feeding lions and dodging charging elephants does a lot to help one develop a thick skin. In the grand scheme of things you realize that shooting a model who is a little tired while the light is fading in the distance and an art director is pacing impatiently is really not such a struggle. Doing a one-day shoot in Miami with 20 outfit changes becomes a lot less stressful, too.”
Spain-Smith plans on producing and printing “Visions of Africa” as a tabletop book next year. And more gallery openings are definitely in the works.
“I’ll be back in Africa again next year,” he says. “Have I mentioned I love what I do?”
Actually, he doesn't have to. His images speak for themselves.
