He also carries a Nikon Coolpix 5000, and a Leica M6, which he now considers indispensable, recalling, for example, how when he used it to snap some personal shots of Carolyn Murphy and her new baby, the results were so moving they brought her father to tears. "I choked up," Smith says, "knowing I had touched someone's life so much with my images."
So how does he know just when to snap the shutter? "There's no easy explanation. It's whatever makes me excited. Once we start shooting, I'm not thinking about composing the shot. The magic just happens. And it's so much fun."
