Fromex is Alive and Well (and Standing on Its Own)
Wolf opened the store in the first quarter of last year as a
concept store. It is a 4,200 sq. ft. location with design
treatments that must have made the pages of architecture magazines.
In my column on the grand opening I quoted Chuck Wolf on the cost
of the store: "It exceeded a million dollars-though I haven't seen
the final bill yet."
Dan took issue with a quote from that column in which Chuck said that New York had "lots of dirty, tired camera stores." In reality, Wolf's is a lot more of a camera store with much less focus on processing than Fromex.
Maybe Dr. Frome, wherever he may be, never achieved his dream but he left a legacy: an entire on-site industry that is doing almost 40% of all the rolls processed in this country (and who knows what the number is world-wide) and at least 12 stores in the New York area, Honolulu and a few other scattered stores in California that still bear his name.
