Innovative design features such as roll pressure indicator, a flip-up feed table, and swing out supply mandrels make these machines easy to use but versatile enough for any finishing department.
The CodaPro series complements Coda's line of of Cold-Mount pressure sensitive laminators, ThermaPro thermal laminates, pressure sensitive adhesives, pressure sensitive laminates, adhesive-coated mount boards, board cutters, and graphic print trimmers.
Drytac Corporation/Interlam (www.drytac.com), Richmond, VA, is set to make a major release, its Interlam and Interlam Eco brands of laminates that complement its original top-of-the-line Protac solvent-based adhesive line of laminates. The original, which is offered in a full range of sizes, often exceeds parameters set for short-term use, explains Jerry Hill, national sales manager, and Drytac is introducing the two new lines as a cost effective solution for less demanding applications.
Ilford (www.ilford.com) is developing products that will do the proper job at a lower cost, as well as reduce workflow issues. In developmental stages is a cold laminate with a reduced level of UV inhibitors, projects that simply don't require top level UV protection in its current offerings. Addressing the work flow issue are two new Instant Dry RC photographic papers Ilford added to its ILFOJET Professional line that are suited to piezo inkjet as well as thermal inkjet printers. With their instant dry capability, these enhance the work flow in a lab.
As the trend continues for sign shops, photo labs and the like to merge and consolidate, the work they do is getting increasingly diverse. Therefore, more and more they need to deliver multiple types of applications with the inventory they carry. For example, shops that in the past produced huge trade show displays may now be getting into fleet graphics. To meet this demand last year Ilford partnered up with Avery Dennison to provide easy application vinyl overlaminates for fleet design. The Avery SEM 1005 EZ Cast White is a 3.1 mil white, high gloss, premium cast vinyl with 100% removability and Avery Dennison Easy Apply (patent pending) technology. Available in 48 in x 300 ft, 54 in x 150 ft and 60 in x 300 ft. sizes, it is ideal for fleet, vehicle and outdoor signage where durability is required.
Following along responsibly-fiscal lines, about two years ago, Uniwood Fome-Cor Division of Nevamar Company (the former Decorative Products Division of International Paper) (www.gatorfoam.com or www.fomecor.com) in Statesville, NC, expanded its Fome-Cor board line with ValuBoard, a graphic arts board designed for creating cost-effective point-of-purchase displays.
ValuBoard consists of white, extruded polystyrene foam laminated between two kraft liners. It offers a smooth surface for decorating- including mounting and laminating applications-with no unsightly flutes to show through. This foam centered board, according to Mike McKitrick, product manager, is "pennies more per square foot" than using corrugated cardboard. Yet it has no ridges, and resists warp longer than corrugated cardboard, giving it a higher quality look, he says. It also provides finishers more options-it can be die-cut, embossed or edges can be crimped to produce a 3-D effect.
Designed for increased productivity, JetPrint Board, a foam board that accepts color decoration directly from inkjet printers, comprises a new category of foam boards designed specifically to meet the rigors of digital printing. It has been designed specifically for use with NovaJet® 880 hybrid printer by ENCAD, Inc., and with other compatible printing systems.
By printing directly onto JetPrint Board, fabricators save time and money. There's no need to print images on separate paper, then use adhesive film to laminate those printed images to mounting board. JetPrint Board cost effectively eliminates the need for print paper and adhesive film, as well as the labor required to complete the lamination process. And, because JetPrint Board accepts decoration directly from digital printers, it is economical to mount images even if the project is a short-run specialty project. GatorFlex, a single-sided Gatorfoam graphic arts board that can be formed into durable curved shapes, makes it easy for graphic artists to flex their creative muscle. Without use of expensive thermoforming equipment, artists can now make long-lasting curved shapes in point-of purchase and retail-store displays, and unique exhibit pieces..
Crescent (www.crescentcardboard.com), has pioneered a digital
media on a 60-point board with good imaging capabilities. This 100%
cotton rag digital board has a smooth finish for producing fine art
images in a side color spectrum.
General Formulations (www.generalformulations.com), Sparta, MI, introduced its new Concept 200 Series Solvent Inkjet Media, adhesive coated PVC films specifically designed for printing with solvent-based inkjet systems. For indoor or outdoor applications, these draw on the firm's 50 years of experience making coated adhesive for the screen printing industry. Due to the explosion in grand format printing, which is growing "in leaps and bounds," say Mike Spidare, product manager, the company made some minor modifications in its product so the it can works with output from Arizona and other major printer manufacturers.
In the faster paced graphics world, displays are being changed out at faster rates than ever. Spidare says the Concept line of static cling films, available in clear and white, have been receiving a lot of attention as a niche product. A prime customer is fast food retailers where window graphics are constantly changing.
Because of the downturn in the economy, he agrees that product today is more price driven, and those using laminating films are not stocking an abundance of product. Consequently, he says, "Service is the name of the game. Because [clients] are not stocking inventory, when they need product, they need it right away."
Adding to its line of filmolux 3 mil PVC overlaminate films and adhesives, Neschen USA ( e-mail: email@example.com) is now carrying filmolux photo and filmolux satin in a new 79-inch width rolls for photofinishers with 72- and 74-inch printers and 80-inch wide laminators. Gudy Wide mounting adhesive is another new offering in the same width, and also boasts improved construction and a carrier that is further opaque white. Another product popular for displays is gudy window, a mounting adhesive in 38- and 48-inch widths that adheres to retail store windows without unsightly bubbles experienced by some brands. Ideal for businesses that change out display windows often, these can be applied by store associates, and are reported to be easily removable for up to six months with no messy residue.
