SP&D's Guide to Albums and Frames
Text by Diane Berkenfeld
Presentation is a critical factor in how your customers perceive you and your work. How do you sell and deliver your images? Are your proofs delivered in a neat box, proof album, or simply wrapped by a rubber band? Do you put single prints in folios or just slip them into an envelope?
You'll be amazed at what happens when you start presenting prints in folios, proofs in books or boxes, and completed albums in dedicated boxes, slipcovers, or fabric bags.
Album and frame companies offer an array of products to satisfy the tastes of all your clientele, whether they prefer a classical fine-art look or a jazzy contemporary effect.
Feeling pressed for time? Many album companies now offer design layout services—everything from design, to printing, texturing, mounting, and binding—to help you deliver a beautiful finished product. SP&D presents the latest display products now available. Enjoy the possibilities. . .
Albums Inc. offers the new Digital Index Portfolio Box, featuring a magnetic, overlapping cover and high-quality D-rings for easy access to the pages within. The Portfolio Box features retaining walls, and can hold up to 60 8x10 or 8 1/2x11 thumbnail proofing pages. The pages, in packages of 50, are sold separately. A square cutout is featured on the cover.
Albums Unlimited is now offering a Kingston album design layout service for photographers too busy or unable to design an album layout for their clients. A complete service includes design layout, lab quality printing and the Kingston album as a package. Albums Unlimited is also offering photo covers for the Kingston album.
ArtZ recently launched BookMaker, a do-it-yourself leather, hardbound album system. BookMaker comes with a leather hardbound book cover, Moab's Entrada Fine Art paper, vellum cover pages and labels. Two sizes, 7x7 and 10x10, will be joined by an 11x14 version this month. ArtZ also offers CardMaker. Three sizes of cards made of Entrada Fine Art paper are available, and come with translucent vellum envelopes. The Entrada paper is printable on both sides.
The do-it-yourself album is really catching on. Bind-It Corp introduced a system that allows you to create beautiful hardbound coffee table books in your own studio. The Coffee Table Covers in a variety of sizes, colors, and materials, your photos and Bind-It's Thermal Binding Unit are all it takes to bind a book.
Capri introduced the Mini Book in three variations: vertical, square, and horizontal. The diminutive Mini Books are offered in wallet, 3 1/2x5, 4x5, 4x6, and 5x5 sizes with either individual prints on the covers, wraparound prints, or a framed cover print and 10 inside prints. The Mini Books are the ideal choice for the "brag book" of photos that slips easily into a purse or pocket. Capri will soon be offering the Modern Image Book in a variety of non-traditional sizes and contemporary layout options.
The latest album creation from Classic Album is the Flush Coffee Table Book, where every page is a panorama. Classic's craftsmen will take your prints and coat, texture, crop, and mount them into the finest matted and flush albums, using exquisite leathers, silks, and papers.
Creative Frames offers a variety of beautiful wood frames as well as their new innovation—Acrylic Composites. Available in black or white Plexiglas, the Acrylic Composites allow you to arrange unique composites of images, from 3x5 to 16x20 prints, and are permanently mounted by Creative Frames. The finished product is as unique as your vision.
Kodak has upgraded its ProShots studio software system to give photographers more flexibility and greater control when working with images. Kodak ProShots v6.2 now has the ability to incorporate panoramic pages in digital album designs (if participating lab offers double-wide digital print sizes), as well as a host of features to make your post production workflow smoother.
Flora Professional Albums
Launching this month, Flora and Elite albums will now be available under the name Flora Professional Albums. These albums offer premium features at reasonable prices. The Elite is a bound book, while the Flora features a Flex-Hinge spine underneath a wrapped outer cover. Flora Professional Albums' mats fit both books. Certain similar mat systems may also be compatible with the Flora and Elite albums, allowing photographers to use the mats that may already be stocked in their studios.
Fujifilm's Studiomaster PRO 2.5 software offers another solution for the photographer who utilizes a digital workflow. Place images in templates that match album company layouts, send the digital files to your Studiomaster PRO lab, and you've now had multiple-image layouts printed on a single page. Fewer prints are needed for the final album.
