In addition to the highly popular traditional albums—slip-in, library-bound flush mount, and coffee-table style—a range of new album systems have arrived that let the creative photographer design and create proof books and albums to showcase their images for clients with different tastes and budgets.
Many album companies now offer software to let you design your customers’ albums on the computer, in addition to offering design solutions for the busy photographer, who doesn’t have the time. These new choices join such programs as Fujifilm’s Studiomaster Pro and Kodak’s Pro Shots, which let you upload images in album layout to your lab for printing. A number of pro labs have also recently begun offering their own album lines.
With the proliferation of high-quality inkjet printers, there’s a trend in designing and printing albums, proof albums, and portfolio albums in-house, that are easily bound via a variety of systems—from the simple to more intricate and sophisticated.
In both albums and frames, the variety of materials that are available to present your images has expanded, as well, to include leathers, silks, metals, acrylics, and more. New album colors and styles are ideal for housing collections of images such as baby and family portraits, seniors, and a myriad of special occasions. Albums are not just for weddings anymore.
An added benefit of providing framing services to your clients directly is the ability to incorporate custom mats, whether they are intricately cut—or double mats—to give your images extra impact. If you have the space and desire to create custom mats in-house, manual and computerized mat cutting systems are available from The Fletcher Terry Company and Wizard International, which make cutting intricate mats a breeze.
As digital becomes more ubiquitous, new digital frames are adding to the variety of ways you can present your photographs, both for client use and to showcase images in your studio.
