On-the-Go Digital Devices

Accessories designed to simplify the digital workflow are introduced to the marketplace everyday.

One category that has been gaining in popularity is the portable hard disk drive and portable CD/DVD burner with built-in media card slots. These units don't need to be tethered to a computer or a TV monitor, although they have the connectivity to do so. Compact and lightweight, they offer an alternative to backing up your digital images when shooting on location.

The basic design of these portable hard drives and portable CD/DVD burners allows you to insert a media card, download your images,verify that the image files copied correctly, and are archived, so you can reformat your cards and continue shooting.

A laptop would do pretty much the same job, but when it isn't possible or practical to bring one along, these more compact, portable digital accessories can be a lifesaver.

Alera Technologies

Alera Technologies offers its DVD/CD Digital Photo Copy Station, which allows you to burn images directly from media cards onto either CD or DVD media. The unit features a built-in card reader that's compatible with a range of memory card formats. Although no computer is required, a USB 2.0 interface is included. The DVD/CD Digital Photo Copy Station can record still images, audio, and video to DVDs at a rate of 8x and CDs at 40x.

Delkin's BurnAway

Delkin Devices

Delkin Devices recently added its BurnAway product line, to include the DVD BurnAway in addition to its CD BurnAway. The DVD Burn- Away allows you to burn images directly to CD/DVD media from a range of media card formats. The DVD Burn- Away writes to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW media, and can playback audio as well as MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos. The unit does not need to be connected to a computer to work, but does feature USB 2.0 connectivity, as well as the ability to be hooked up to a TV for display. Delkin offers an optional car charger accessory for the BurnAway units.

Epson America

Epson P-2000

Epson introduced its second generation portable hard disk drive with a 3.8" LCD and 40GB capacity—the Epson P-2000 Multimedia Storage Viewer. The P-2000 offers album and slideshow views, as well as a zoom feature, TV connectivity, and USB 2.0 connection for Mac and Windows-based computers. The P-2000 features CompactFlash and Secure Digital media card slots. Other types of media can be downloaded via the use of an adapter. JPEG and RAW file formats can be viewed using the P-2000. Audio and video playback, and direct printing to select Epson printers are just a few of its many functions.

EZPnP EZDigiMagic DM220


EZPnP announced the latest generation of its EZDigiMagic, DM220-04, which allows you to burn images from high-capacity media cards (1-4GB) directly to DVD-R and DVD-RW media. The unit incorporates a range of features not available on previous models, including an LCD display, "Ultra-Verify" mode, and a multi-session format that uses the entire DVD. The DVD-burning EZDigiMagic supports all major memory card formats, and is powered by four rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. The unit can be powered by an AC adapter or optional car charger kit. Other features include a USB 2.0 interface for connectivity to PC and Mac computers. EZPnP is scheduled to begin shipping the EZDigiMagic units in March.

EZPnP also offers a portable hard disk drive, the EZDigiMagic Palm-Size Portable Backup Device—available in 20GB and 40GB versions. The compact unit features built-in memory card slots, Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries, and is about the size of a deck of cards. A USB 2.0 interface offers connectivity to Mac and PCs.

JOBO Fototechnic

JOBO's latest introduction in the portable hard drive category is the Giga Vu PRO, a hard drive with a 40GB capacity and LCD for the display of images. The Giga Vu PRO features a 3.8" LCD with touchscreen capability, USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi compatibility. A range of media card formats are accepted by the unit, and it is compatible with Macs and PCs. The Giga Vu PRO supports JPEG and a number of RAW file formats, and can playback images in thumbnail and slideshow views, as well as zoom. The unit can also play audio and video.

In addition to the Giga Vu PRO, JOBO distributes a range of portable hard drive units, with and without LCD displays, as well as units that can burn images directly from media cards to CD.
