IPC Honors Lifetouch CEO

The IPC (International Photographic Council), a non-governmental organization of the United Nations will hold its annual Hall of Fame luncheon on Thursday, February 21 at the U.N. in New York City. IPC will honor Lifetouch's Paul Harmel, by inducting him into the IPC Hall of Fame. Lifetouch has been a leader in school photography for nearly 70 years; with operations in all 50 states and Canada. Harmel, chairman and CEO of Lifetouch Inc. has been involved in the photographic industry for over 30 years.

Under Harmel's leadership, the employee owned company has grown to over a billion dollars in sales, and has become the market leader in professional portraiture. His vision has improved industry standards for quality and service, and raised the level of expectation for customers.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Ted Fox, executive director of the Photo Marketing Association International (PMAI). David M. Ritz, chairman and CEO of Ritz Camera Centers will also speak at the event. Ritz heads the largest specialty photographic chain in the U.S. with over 1,000 locations.

Roland (www.rolanddga.com) has named DAVID GOWARD president and CEO of Roland DGA Corp. He succeeds BOB CURTIS, who has served as president and CEO since 1997, and who has been named chairman of Roland DGA's board of directors. Goward has more than 30 years of senior-level management experience, primarily in the signage and graphic arts industries, including 13 years with Roland DGA Corp. Most recently, he served the company as executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Digi-Data Corporation (www.digidata.com) named WALTER HINTON as vice president of corporate development. He will be responsible for Digi-Data's strategic direction and key technology partnerships. Prior to joining Digi-Data, Hinton was CEO and founder of Zen Mountain Technologies, a storage services firm.

Eastman Kodak Co. (www.kodak.com) has named KEVIN JOYCE, ANTOINETTE MCCORVEY, and GUSTAVO OVIEDO as vice presidents of the company. Joyce was named managing director, United States & Canada (US&C) region, for Kodak's Graphic Communications Group in April 2005. He previously served as vice president of sales for KPG's US&C region. McCorvey was appointed director and vice president of investor relations in March 2006. She joined Kodak in December 1999 as director, Imaging Materials Manufacturing. Oviedo was appointed managing director, Asia Pacific Region, Eastman Kodak Co., in March 2007. He also serves as managing director, Asia Pacific Region, for Kodak's Graphic Communications Group, a position he assumed in 2006 following Kodak's acquisition of Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG).

Corbis (www.corbis.com) announced that EDIE TOBIAS will rejoin the company to lead its celebrity offering, including the Outline, Outline@Home, OutlineLive and Entertainment red-carpet collections. Tobias is taking over from Beate Chelette, senior director of photography, who successfully led the division for nearly two years.

Tobias has more than 20 years of experience and is widely respected as an industry expert and advocate for photographers. She previously worked at Corbis as a director of photography from 2000 to 2005, following its acquisition of Sharpshooters where she was president.

KEVIN P. RICHARD, Chief Operating Officer for Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. (www.mohawkpaper.com) has been appointed to Mohawk's Board of Directors. Richard, who first joined Mohawk in 1995 as manager of Engineering and Maintenance, is a 26-year veteran of the paper industry. Prior to joining Mohawk, Richard held positions with International Paper for over 13 years.



Workshops

The 3rd Annual HORIZON PHOTOGRAPHY SUMMIT (www.horizonworkshops.com/summit) will convene in Chesapeake City, MD, the first week in May. Sixteen of the nation's outstanding photographer/instructors will gather for classes, discussions, portfolio reviews, and field trips led by, among others, Jim Clark (Nature), Lou Jones (Travel), Harvey Stein (Documentary), Bob Madden (The National Geographic Assignment), and Steve Gottlieb (Creative Vision). Horizon Photography Workshops was established in 2004 by photographer Steve Gottlieb. Weekend workshops are offered all year around at its headquarters in northeastern Maryland, as well as in Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., Deleware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island, with a wide range of subjects geared to different levels of experience.

KUBOTA IMAGE TOOLS (www.kubotaimagetools.com) announced its return to Italy for its 4th creative photography workshop for professional and advanced amateur photographers. This 7-day photography workshop (October 5-11, 2008) includes several exciting photo excursions, classroom instruction, photography critiquing and more. This year's workshop attendees will tour Southern Italy. Highlights include excursions to the breath-taking Amalfi Coast, the ruins of Pompeii, as well as visits to some of the oldest and most picturesque towns in the world.

PLANETNEIL.COM and Neil van Niekerk announced a series of lighting workshops for 2008, to be held in cities across the United States. These one-day workshops will provide practical, how-to advice for achieving the best results when using on-camera flash in a variety of lighting situations, both indoors and out. Using a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice for the attendees, these workshops will help photographers refine their flash technique so they can achieve more consistent and predictable results. The following dates and cities have been confirmed: Phoenix, AZ, March 3; San Francisco Bay Area, March 5; Portland, OR, March 7; Charlotte, NC, March 17; Atlanta, GA, March 18; Las Vegas, NV, April 10; Grand Rapids, MI, September 16; Chicago, IL, September 17.
