You’ve got the latest and greatest Rechargeable, Alkaline, and Lithium batteries. The person shopping in your store has one device in mind and a confused look on his or her face. Quick! What do you do? To provide you with the best possible answer to that question, PTN went straight to the power source; the battery makers.
According to Robert Kielhorn, a representative for Lenmar Enterprises Inc., it’s easy to identify the type of battery your customer needs according to the device they plan to use it in. From there you can determine whether they need Alkalines, Rechargeables, or a specific Lithium battery. “For high-power-drain devices like digital cameras and camcorders rechargeables are almost always best,” says Kielhorn. If you try using Alkalines in a high-power situation, the batteries will be depleted of power in a very short period of time, and the customer will end up frustrated at having to buy battery after battery. Kielhorn points out that “with rechargeables you’ve got eight or nine hundred times you can recharge those batteries instead of buying new ones.”
But say your customer is looking to replace the batteries in a smoke detector or the buzzer for their Scattergories board game, that’s when Alkalines would probably be the best choice. Similarly, any device that uses a little bit of power over a long period of time are ideal candidates for Alkaline batteries. “Alkalines are perfect for things like that clock on your wall. The one on mine has been there for almost 20 years and I’ve only had to replace those batteries about ten times,” says Kielhorn.
Customers primarily need Lithium batteries when it is dictated that they be used by the manufacturer of the device. This is the case for most cell phones and the newer small camera models because the batteries can be molded into a variety of shapes. According to Maurice Mizrahi, an executive VP at Digipower, “Now that cameras are getting smaller, slim ones like the T7 and the Nikon series require a lot of energy in a small package so Lithiums are the battery of choice.” It’s also particularly helpful if the customer has the device with them or already knows the exact brand and model number of the device they are purchasing batteries for. However, they do exist as AAs and AAAs, and are typically the battery of choice for all things that require a recharge every couple of days due to non-stop use, such as portable gaming systems and walkie talkies. This is because they can be recharged very quickly and an enormous number of times.
Other tricks include referring to a battery’s packaging to see if the company has listed any information on device compatibility.
