With most things now automated, it's good to know there's people like the folks behind this site, which readers know as the source for our weekly Best Fares column.
Specializing in, well, sitting around and finding the lowest, craziest deals and posting them before they disappear (which often is within minutes of it appearing), they've saved countless people countless dollars on trips ranging from a sudden vacation to Venice because some dork at the airlines accidentally listed it as costing something like $65 round trip.
That's right - everyone's favorite timewaster is the go-to for that gonzo videolog from someone-youdon'tknow's trip to Tokyo, or wherever else some dude happened to be carrying a digicam with video capability. Loads of fun.
BEST NEW HOTEL BOOKING SITE
This isn't the place to find a cheap room near the convention center in Kansas City. You come here to be inspired by the listings of over 2,000 hotels, handselected by the team of travel writers that drive the site, which is filled with articles they've written about the destinations served.
BEST HOTEL BOOKING ENGINE
It's a booking engine, designed to make money, but it's also user-driven.
Rate the hotel after you stay, and if the overall rating drops below a certain number, the hotel's off the list. Properties aren't what you'd always expect - they've got everything from chintz to chilly, but not one of the selections is uncool.
Who doesn't love a luxury hotel or resort, particularly at up to 50 percent off? If that statement has you all tingly, you don't know what you've been missing - check out this popular site, which both auctions off packages and sells you straight up discounted deals, whichever route is more comfortable for you. The majority of what's sold here is well worth the price.
We would have voted for our own addition to the mix - blogs.nypost.com/travel - but that would just be rude.
Besides our awesome debut, though, the scene hasn't been too exciting, as we've watched the betterknown travel blog get sloppy and pointless.
One has us hooked, though: Ben Mutzabaugh's excellent Today In The Sky. Air travel news can be fun!
BEST QUICK ESCAPE
Where would you like to go today? Just punch up this simply laid-out site, type in your destination and you're there. Like so many other user-driven sites, it improves as the days go by, but the rate at which photos are added is almost astounding.
Best of all, you don't need to log on to view or save anything. And why is it that their images just look so slick, no matter who takes them? Even our stuff looks good up there (oh yes, we're users).
BEST WAY TO SAVE ON GAS
Prices aren't the nightmare they were earlier this year, but that doesn't mean we aren't in for another wild ride this spring and summer.
Be prepared with this site that lets you find the cheapest per-gallon price in whichever ZIP code you happen to be in at the time.
